For the longest time I wanted to be a lawyer. I think I was about 11 when I first decided that I wanted to go down that path. In high school I got highly involved in Youth Court (a court for the kids who screwed up). I interned for a district attorney in my hometown (my only time going to the jail- and it was just a visitation). It was a huge passion of mine.
It's times like these where I'm glad I chose a different profession. I've been slightly obsessed with the Casey Anthony trial. Her lawyer is a tool, to say the least. He blames her bad behavior on the environment she was raised in, which is just stupid. I wont argue that your environment doesn't play a major role in how you turn out, but you can't go around killing people and blame it on a dysfunctional home life. It doesn't work that way. The thing that really gets me is how he kept repeating "the prosecution never proved she was a bad mother- in fact, everyone said she was a fantastic mother!". Great. She's a wonderful mom. Who partied every night her daughter was "missing" (actually, she had already been murdered, but whatever). NO mom I know would live it up days after their child passed away. Yes, everyone grieves in their own way- but she wasn't even grieving. Aside from that, something else came to mind while he kept doting on her awesome parenting skills.
The following women were also deemed "awesome moms". You'll notice a common theme, I'm sure.
Andrea Yates- Awesome mom who murdered her 5 children in 2001. Her oldest, Noah, would be 17 this year. Her youngest, Mary, would be 11. The middle kids, John, Paul, and Luke, would be 16, 14, and 12, respectfully. Awesome mom.
Diane Downs- Awesome mom who murdered 1 child and attempted to murder 2 others. She made up some huge story about being mugged. Her middle child, Cheryl, died before she reached the hospital. Her oldest child, Christie, and her youngest child, Danny, both survived, although Danny is paralyzed from the neck down. It was Christie's testimony that cemented her mom's fate in jail. Awesome mom.
Susan Smith- Awesome mom who murdered her 2 young sons by driving them into a lake, all while they were strapped in their carseats and unable to escape. She told police she was mugged, but the truth eventually came out. Awesome mom.
Sadly, I could go on and on. All of these people who were thought to be awesome parents, yet they weren't. I sincerely hope the jury doesn't believe such a ridiculous excuse as "everyone said she was a great mom!". It absolutely makes me sick to think about it. I'm not sure how someone could defend such a heinous crime, nor am I sure how they could live with themselves after making excuses for such things.
Tomorrow, the prosecution gets to give a rebuttal, and then the jury gets the case. With any luck, there will be some justice for that sweet little girl. Its cases like this that make me so glad I didn't become a lawyer- I wouldn't be able to stomach myself as a defense attorney (or I'd just throw the case), and I wouldn't be able to check my emotions as a prosecutor. Thank goodness there are people in the world that can check their emotions, or justice wouldn't be available for all these innocent victims.
